Dear Mark,

Earlier this month I assumed the office of President of Arizona Right to Life. I follow in the footsteps of our immediate past president Virginia (Jinny) Perron; a dedicated pro-life warrior. I am humbled and grateful for the confidence and trust the Board of Directors have shown in me and I vow to continue the fight for all life from conception to natural death.It is an exciting time to be Pro-Life! The nation is becoming decidedly more pro-life, reflected in the great victories of many pro-life candidates in November. Our efforts are creating victories for life! The Senate recently voted down a bill that would have allowed abortions on military bases by a vote of 57-40. We called you to action, and you heard the call, and directed thousands of calls and emails to the U. S. Capitol. Your voices were heard. Thank you for supporting this effort and helping defeat this deadly bill.

As we turn our calendars to 2011, many new faces will be seen walking the halls of the Senate and House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. Thanks to your efforts, many of those faces will be Pro-Life. When Congress begins its next session, we expect to see many of the offensive portions of the Health Care bill repealed, especially government funded abortions. I urge you to continue to tell your Senators and Representatives, to repeal any law that pays for abortions with taxpayer dollars, and to cut off the flow of government funds to organizations that perform abortions.

We have many great opportunities for you to show your support for Life. On Sunday, January 23, 2011, we will hold our annual March for Life Rally. Please note the date has changed from January 22nd. The March will begin at Brophy Preparatory School at 12:30 p.m. and end at the rally site, Steele Indian School Park. The rally begins at 1:00 p.m. with pro-life speakers, entertainment, and thousands of like minded pro-lifers rallying to end abortion. Please join us as we commemorate the anniversary of the Roe V. Wade Supreme Court decision, and “REMEMBER the 50 million lives lost to abortion, CELEBRATE those mothers who chose life, and BELIEVE in victory for life with God’s help!”

Sidewalk Counseling Training Available AZRTL Speakers Bureau members LeeAnne Abel and Karen Williams are offering a 4 hour training on how to intellectually, graciously and effectively communicate with women seeking an abortion and persuade them to consider another choice. This wonderful training is a must for anyone who wants to engage in meaningful conversation on the abortion issue. This is part of the annual Children of the Rosary Christmas Eve Vigil. What better way to bring in Christmas then to Pray to Defend Life and Stop the death of abortion.

AzRTL PAC Wishes to Congratulate All the AzRTL PAC Endorsed Candidates elected on Election Day.

November 2nd was a tremendous day for the Pro-Life community and AzRtL PAC endorsed candidates. Here in Arizona the Pro-Life community gained a clean sweep, gaining all statewide offices including Governor. We also won 5 of the 8 Congressional seats, and a supermajority in both State House and Senate. In races where AzRTL PAC endorsed we were an astounding 62-9. This will make for an exciting year as these Pro-Life voices enter government. Be sure to congratulate these remarkable individuals, and remember that your vote does matter, so continue to Vote Life… Because without it liberty and the pursuit of happiness are impossible.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Loses Catholic Status Over Terminated Pregnancy

Phoenix, AZ – December 21, 2010 - Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, declared today that St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center can no longer be considered Catholic. The Bishop stated that the Hospital and Catholic Healthcare West, had failed to comply with the Ethical and Religious Directives of the Church.

The issue stems from an incident last year, where St. Joseph’s Hospital elected to terminate the pregnancy of a seriously ill pregnant woman because they considered the pregnancy put the mother’s life at risk. Hospital officials have stated that they terminated the pregnancy to save the mother’s life.

Sister Margaret McBride, who sat on the hospital’s ethics panel and allowed the abortion to take place, was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for her participation. Catholic Church doctrine considers that when the baby’s life is specifically targeted for termination, such an act is considered an abortion. The Church does not consider it an abortion when an unborn child dies as an indirect result of any other medical efforts to assist the mother.

According to the Bishop, this abortion was not the only reason for his decision. Recently, he had learned that for more than seven years CHW has committed numerous violations of the Catholic Church’s Ethical and Religious Directives for Healthcare.

Arizona Right to Life acknowledges the difficulty of this decision and our hearts and prayers go out to the family who lost their child. While we realize that this decision may be divisive, we praise and support the stance taken by Bishop Olmsted and the Catholic Church that promotes life and values the lives of both mother and child during the pregnancy.

Senate Votes Down Bill with Provision that Would Have Allowed Abortions on Military Bases

After action alerts by many pro-life groups, including Arizona Right to Life, calls and emails flooded Senators’ inboxes in response to the Defense Authorization Bill. The bill, which contained an added amendment that would have authorized abortions on U.S. military bases around the world, was voted on earlier this month. Thanks to the outpouring of Pro-Life Support this bill was voted down 57-40. The Call was given and you answered, and we have gained a great victory. Dear Friend,

The holiday season is such a wonderful time of year. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are looking forward to a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. November was a wonderful month for the Pro-Life community and we did, indeed, have much to be thankful for. Sweeping victories for pro-life candidates across the nation have garnered a pro-life majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and a much stronger voice in the Senate. John Boehner of Ohio was elected by his peers as Speaker of the House. Boehner, a staunch advocate for life issues, is a breath of fresh air following the disastrous tenure of pro-death Nancy Pelosi as Speaker for the past four years. The American people spoke out on Election Day, mandating this Congress to protect innocent life at all stages from conception to natural death!

Arizona’s government also became decidedly more pro-life on Election Day. Arizona Right to Life PAC endorsed candidates made a clean sweep of the statewide races including governor. We also claimed victory in five out of the eight congressional seats. And nearly every candidate we endorsed won election in the State House and Senate. In races where AZRTL PAC made an endorsement we were an impressive 62-9, a clear message to policy makers that Arizonans are pro-life and expect our leaders to reflect our unwavering commitment to life.

But even as we celebrate these great victories, we must remember to stay vigilant. Our newly elected leaders will not assume office until January, hence the pro-death advocates they are replacing will do all they can to advance their agenda while they are still in power.

As we count or many blessings this holiday season let us not forget our elderly. The great men and women, who worked tirelessly to build a life for themselves and a better future for this generation while serving and protecting this great nation in many different ways, are now entering the twilight of their remarkable lives. This current administration seeks to devalue these very precious lives by making it more difficult for them to receive life saving treatment. This will have profound repercussions for all of us, as devaluing just one human life devalues all human life! History teaches us that a society that does not respect and protect human life will ultimately bring about its own destruction.

Earlier this year President Obama skirted the Senate confirmation process by appointing Donald Berwick as the administrator for the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services, an influential position that governs the programs that offer medical coverage to the elderly. Berwick has been a long supporter of rationing healthcare and medication, allowing certain patients to die who were at the end of life. All life is precious and, therefore, every effort should be made to preserve and protect life. Appointments like Berwick clearly demonstrate the agenda that this Administration is planning to implement.

We must advocate against men like Berwick, and continue to fight for life at all stages. We will have help in the coming year with the many, newly elected, legislators taking office. But we need your help, more than ever, to promote pro-life candidates, inform the public and educate our leaders as to the importance of life issues.

I am profoundly grateful for all who assist in the cause of life. You make these victories possible, and allow all of us to continue on in the mission to Promote, Preserve and Protect the Sanctity of Life.

Perron was presented a check in the amount of $2700 on November 2, 2010 at the Council’s Hall in Chandler. The funds were raised at a “Dinner, Dance and Auction” fundraiser held in support of AZRTL in October. Three AZRTL Chapters participated in making the event an awesome success.

Scotland Overwhelming Says No to Euthanasia

On December 1st, the Scottish Parliament Voted Overwhelmingly to defeat a bill that would have allowed Euthanasia in the country. The vote wad defeated 82-16 across multiple party lines. This follows simiar victories in South Australia, Western Australia and Canada, who all opposed euthanasia and assisted suicide bills.

Senate to Vote Soon on Defense Authorization Bill Which May Include Provision Allowing Abortions on Military Bases

The United States Senate will soon vote on a Defense Authorization Bill which has several different versions. One of the versions has language that will change a decades old policy and allow abortions on our nation’s military bases both abroad and domestically. Arizona Right to Life encourages you to contact your senators and urge them to vote No on the legislation if this amendment is included.

September was a busy and exciting month for Arizona Right to Life! A heartfelt thank you to all who attended our 32^nd Annual Conference or supported it in any way. It was rated as a highly motivational, educational, and fantastic event by our attendees thanks, in no small part, to our outstanding and dynamic speakers! The outpouring of support and unity from our pro-life activists around the state was genuinely heartwarming and energizing to all of us at Arizona Right to Life!

But there is still so much more work to do and we need your continued support and encouragement as we go forth with our mission of promoting, preserving and protecting the Sanctity of Innocent Life!

October is Respect Life month – a perfect time for all of us to reexamine our hearts, motives, and circumstances to find increased ways to cherish life at all stages however and wherever we can. As 40 Days for Life campaign continues during this month as well as other pro-life events throughout our state, you are strongly encouraged to participate in whatever activities are near you! Hundreds Descend on Scottsdale for Annual Conference.

Arizona Right to Life held its annual Pro-Life Conference September 17-18th at the Chaparral Suites Scottsdale. Hundreds turned out for great keynote addresses, breakout sessions, food, entertainment and the chance to mix and mingle with like minded pro-life advocates from around the state.

The conference began with an outstanding pro-life roundtable with such dynamic speakers as Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics International, Marilyn Musgrave from the Susan B. Anthony List, Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, M.D. of the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, Deacon Dick Petersen, M.D. and Trent Horn from Justice for All. The roundtable was moderated by AZRTL Board member Dennis Wales. Each speaker had the opportunity to introduce themselves, and speak briefly on their topics for the upcoming conference. Then conference guests had the opportunity for a Question and Answer session with these amazing champions for life. It was an enlightening forum enjoyed by all in attendance.

Mark Crutcher, President of Life Dynamics, Inc. and creator of “Maafa 21″ served as the keynote speaker to the crowd Friday night and again at Saturday’s Luncheon. Energizing the crowd with astounding stories of pro-life activism, the costs of abortion and the importance of staying vigilant in the fight to defend life despite the odds and opposition in doing so. Attendees of Friday night’s Dinner Program were also fortunate to hear the extemely talented duo of Tyler and Linsey Maxson. They graced the crowd with the National Anthem and a rendition of “The Prayer” that touched everyone and brought many in the crowd to tears with its beauty.

McWhirter Award Winner John Shadegg also addressed the crowd, at both the Friday evening program and the Saturday luncheon, sharing personal experiences of how everyday pro-life citizens affected Congress and saved the lives of innocent human life. As a congressman he fought to protect against legislation that would hurt the pro-life cause. And witnessed first-hand how calls and letters to congressmen turned the tide in fighting harmful and deadly legislation. He was honored to be the McWhirter Award Winner and thankful for the support of pro-life Arizonans.

The conference continued Saturday with a wonderful and heartwarming keynote address from Former Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, on her experience serving with men like John Shadegg and Trent Franks from Arizona and how they worked together to further the pro-life cause in Congress. She also thanked all the pro-life supporters to remain active and informed, and continue urging their leaders to stand in defense of life.

The rest of the day was spent in dynamic and educational breakout sessions covering topics such as: Social Media, Sidewalk Counseling, Social Activism, End of Life Issues, The Connection Between Breast Cancer and Abortion, Having an Effective Dialogue on Abortion Issues, Maafa 21 and many more.

The conference was an overhelming success enjoyed by all. Everyone left the event feeling educated, enlightened and energized to continue on in the Preserving, Promoting and Protecting the sanctity of innocent human life!

A Decade of Death

It’s been 10 years since the abortion drug RU-486, sometimes called Mifepristone gained FDA approval. The media is heralding this drug as a “pioneer in women’s choice” and a “medical milestone”. We, in the pro-life community know that this drug has caused a decade of death and the loss of countless little ones. What makes this deadly anniversary more appalling is that it comes so closely after the FDA ratified another deadly abortion drug called “Ella”. This drug, which many are calling the “morning after pill” is being used more and more since it’s approval earlier this year. Scientists are now becoming aware of the effect this pill has on unborn children as it literally starves the child inside the womb. Those babies fortunate enough to survive the pill face a number of developmental challenges as their forming brains are deprived of oxygen and nutrients needed to flourish.

This Government’s new healthcare plan continues to raise concern for all Americans. As the Healthcare Reform Bill goes forward in its implementation several pro-life hospitals are becoming increasingly concerned that they will eventually be mandated to perform abortions as a condition of federal funding of our tax dollars. Many new and sad reports are surfacing that hospitals, some who have served their communities for decades, are closing their doors rather than face this mandate to kill their patients. Many see this as their only alternative until this abhorrent law is repealed.

Mesa Chapter

The Mesa Right to Life has been extraordinarily busy these past two months in promoting pro-life awareness in the Public arena!

On September 10^th, 11^th, and 12^th Mesa RTL hosted a pro-life booth at the Annual Marian Conference held at the Doubletree Resort in Scottsdale where they petitioned signatures against taxpayer funded abortions! Pro-life literature and items spreading the pro-life message were available to over a thousand participants throughout this 3-day weekend!

The Mesa Right to Life underwrote a Bronze sponsorship in support of the Arizona Right to Life’s 32^nd Annual Educational Pro-Life Conference on September 17^th and 18^th at the Chaparral Suites Resort in Scottsdale with table seating for 10 for both Friday evening’s dinner and Saturday’s luncheon. A double booth filled with pro-life materials and items bringing awareness to a Culture of Life was available to 300 participants during this 2-day event! Again signatures were petitioned to stop taxpayer funded abortions!

Chapter Leaders for Mesa RTL provided the dinner and dance music for the The Knights of Columbus Chandler Council #3121 super-fun and extremely successful fundraising dinner and live auction to benefit Arizona Right to Life and sponsored a table for ten, as well – on Saturday, October 2^nd!

On October 9^th Mesa Right to Life sponsored a table of ten in support of Rosary Sunday – bringing the pro-life message to the crowd in excess of 200 attendees. On the 10^th a pro-life booth was hosted by the Chapter at Rosary Sunday at the Civic Plaza and Convention Center in Phoenix. Once again pro-life literature and other items were available to a convention filled venue. Opposition to tax payer funded abortions was heavily promoted and supported!

Officers and members of the Mesa Chapter enthusiastically supported the” Manhattan Declaration Comes to the Desert” event at the Phoenix Diocesan Center on Saturday, October 16^th. This non-sectarian motivational and informative event hosted several outstanding speakers from a number of pro-life organizations including the Alliance Defense Fund and Susan B. Anthony!

The Chapter will be hosting their regular Prayer Breakfast meeting on Tuesday, October 26^th with Catholic members attending the 8:30 Mass at Holy Cross Church followed by Breakfast for everyone at Coco’s!

The Mesa Chapter Leaders have also been asked to provide the dinner music for the Holy Cross Respect Life Annual Lasagna Dinner and in addition host a pro-life booth. The Chapter will be underwriting a table for ten in support of this great event!

Southeast (Chandler) Chapter

A lot of great things are happening at the Southeast (Chandler) Chapter of Right to Life. On October 2^nd we supported a Dinner, Dance Auction held by the Knights of Columbus Fr Patterson Council #3121 at the Knights Hall in Chandler. A great time was had by all and everybody had fun bidding for a number of items generously donated for the event. All proceeds went directly to supporting Arizona Right to Life. The chapter also supported AZRTL at its annual Conference, “Education: Strategy for Life” September 17^th and 18^th . Both the President and Treasurer of our chapter were in attendance, while our Vice-President worked the event. We have our chapter meeting coming up on Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 644 E. Chandler Blvd, in Chandler. The meeting will start at 7pm for approximately one hour. Please donate your time and support to our, always important, mission of saving the “little ones” If you are unable to join us, take a moment and pray for the end of abortion. Southwest Chapter

In the South West Chapter we are proud to support any and all Pro-Life Events. On the weekend of September 17th & 18^th our Chapter was represented at AZRTL’s annual conference. Hearing the keynote speakers and seeing Congressman Shadegg receive the glorious McWhirter award for all his work in the support of life was awesome. Then on Saturday our daughter was able to join in the “break-out sessions” put on by such dedicated and committed Pro-Life speakers as Mark Crutcher, Dr Angela Lanfranchi, Trent Horn, Nikolas Nikas, Deacon Richard Petersen M.D., and Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave to name a few. The whole weekend was an enlightening experience. On October 30^th, 2010 we are participating in the Bethesda Fall Festival beingheld at the Dennis DeConcini Park in Avondale. We will start things off at 11am and continue until 5pm that evening. This event is sponsored by the Bethesda Church of God in Christ located in Avondale. We Hope to see you there. Tempe Chapter

The Tempe Chapter has been and continues to be very active in the Pro-Life Community. In September we supported AZRTL’s annual conference by buying a bronze sponsorship package, which included a table for ten members to attend the conference on Saturday, an advertisement in the Conference Program, and a booth in the front lobby from which to spread our message. An enlightened, educational and uplifting time was had by all in attendance. In addition to our own chapter members being there, we invited some students from ASU’s Students for Life to attend. We believe it is imperative to work with today’s youth on Pro-Life issues, to continue on in the fight and to become and stay educated on right to life issues. Our chapter was represented at the Chandler Knights of Columbus “Dinner, Dance Auction” on the 2^nd of October, where all proceeds went to AZRTL.

We are always looking for new members. Our next meeting is on Monday, 15 November 2010 – and on most 3^rd Monday’s of the month – at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Rural Road, just south of Broadway. Congressman Driehaus Uses Criminal complaint to Gag Critics; NRLC Refutes His Claims

Congressman Driehaus, who claims to be a Pro-Life Democrat, filed a complaint with elections officials in his home state of Ohio to silence his political critics who state he voted for taxpayer funded abortions when he voted for Obama’s Health care plan. Dear Friend,

Each year around this time I start seeing advertisements and billboards promoting “The Race for the Cure” an annual breast cancer awareness campaign held in October by the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Most of us have felt the agonizing and terrible effects of breast cancer within our families and are moved to support the mission of any organization who raises money and awareness for research, prevention and medical care for women diagnosed with this dreadful disease. But did you know, the Susan G. Komen Foundation donates thousands upon thousands of dollars in grant money to Planned Parenthood every year? They claim these grants are for mammograms and prevention care at local or rural affliates that do not otherwise have access to these services. Whatever their justification the funding to any organization that engages in the killing of thousands of innocent babies is reprehensible and should nver be supported under any circumstance!

Equally reprehensible is their denial that abortion increases the risk for breast cancer. Susan G. Komen states on their website that abortion is not a risk factor for breast cancer, despite countless studies that prove otherwise. Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, a noted breast surgical oncologist and Co-Director of the Steeplechase Cancer Center’s Sanofi-Aventis Breast Program, has lectured around the country about the connection, and the deadly partnership between Planned Parenthood and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

We are thrilled that Dr. Lanfranchi will be participating in our upcoming Conference, enlightening us on this very important issue – addressing the research that definitely shows the link between post-abortive women and the risk of breast cancer. Dr. Lanfranchi is highlighted in our Educational Outreach section below.

Arizona Right to Life joins Life Education Corp. in offering heartfelt Congratulations to Doug and Melanie Pritchard on the arrival of their beautiful baby girl Gabriela Cecilia Pritchard on July 28th. Our prayers continue to be with Melanie for a speedy and full recovery. Melanie is the former Education Director for Life Education Corporation and her mother, Sherry, recently retired as AZRTL’s Office Manager.

Arizona Right to Life and Life Education Corp. would also like to offer our thoughts and prayers to Barb Willis and her family after a devastating plane crash. Barb’s sister Lori and her son Austin were killed, while husband Greg and the remaining children Pia and Summer were injured. We offer our condolences for the loss of their loved ones and prayers for a full speedy recovery for the injured family members. Barb Willis is the President of the Phoenix Crisis Pregnancy Center.

The Arizona Right to Life Board of Directors are pleased to announce Congressman John Shadegg as the 2010 recipient of the McWhirter Award. Congressman Shadegg, who will retire from his seat in the United States House of Representatives at the end of this term, has been a champion for life in his 12 years in Congress. Congressman Shadegg will accept the award at a banquet in his honor at the Annual Pro-Life Conference held September 17-18th in Scottsdale.

The Wallace W. McWhirter Award is given annually to an individual or individuals who exemplify the zeal and commitment to the pro-life cause that Mr. McWhirter personified when he founded Arizona Right to Life in 1971.

Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a breast surgical oncologist and Co-director of the Steeplechase Cancer Center’s Sanofi-Aventis Breast Program. U.S. Senate Confirms Elena Kagan to Serve as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

On August 5th, by a 63-37 vote The United States Senate voted in favor of confirming Elena Kagan to our nation’s highest court. Voting in favor of confirmation were 58 Democrats and 5 Republicans, in opposition were 36 Republicans and 1 Democrat.

Arizona Right to Life joined National Right to Life in opposing the confirmation of Kagan based on her memos as a Clinton aide in the mid 1990′s, where she was a key strategist in opposition of the Partial -Birth Abortion ban. Recently released documents also show her taking objectional stances on assisted suicide, human cloning and political free speech.

We are extremely disappointed at the action of the Senate in appointing such a candidate to this prominent position and will continue to oppose any judicial appointments who do not respect the unalienable right to life.

Dear Mark,

This July as we celebrate the 234th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence my thoughts are drawn to those brave men who served as the founding fathers of our nation. These brave men risked their livelihoods, their freedom and even their very lives to sign their names to a document that would give birth to our great nation. As men, who had been burdened by tyranny, oppression and persecution, they saw the need to make a stand and fight for those “certain unalienable rights… Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” These men knew, even then, that government was created by the “consent of the governed”, and it is the primary responsibility of government to protect and defend these rights.

The war to defend these principles wages on today and it is as important as it was in 1776 for us to take a stand to ensure that government defends these “unalienable rights,” among them the right to life. Every day forces seek to chip away at that right, to justify the denial of that right to our unborn brothers and sisters. Many states around the nation are considering bills to defend life and make the horrific practice of abortion more difficult. Florida has passed a bill requiring all women seeking an abortion to get an ultrasound, a practice that has proven to severely decrease the numbers of abortions. But even with this great pro-life victory supported by both houses of the state legislature and the people, Governor Crist, a man who once proclaimed himself a “pro-life” candidate vetoed the legislation drawing a great public outcry. Similar bills are being considered elsewhere, and there has never been such a strong push to assert pro-life principles. But even with this strong pro-life trend, we face an immense battle as those who would seek to deny these rights fight harder to assert their agenda. Even now the U.S. Senate is considering the appointment of former U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan to fill a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. Whoever is selected to this important seat will have the opportunity to shape the legal and political landscape of our country for decades. Kagan has an atrocious record, and has dodged questions in senate confirmation hearings regarding memos she wrote as a member of the Clinton White House legal team. These memos express her desire to reword the definitions of late-term abortions so they appear less gruesome and more acceptable to the public, thus swaying political sentiment and allowing the practice be part of the health care plan. A person with such ideals would have a devastating effect to the pro-life community if allowed to be seated as a justice.

We as a people, as a nation and as those with a voice must speak out to defend those who cannot defend themselves and oppose the actions of men and women like Governor Crist and Elena Kagan.

The time is now for us, who cherish those rights espoused in the Declaration of Independence, to stand and be heard, just like the 56 men who put pen to paper on that great document, and fight those who would deny others their right to life. We must stand united in the cause of life, to cast off idle differences and disagreements, and come together as those men did to declare to the world that the right to life is so valuable that it is worth fighting for. And there has never been a more important time to fight than now!

In this spirit I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day and that we all can incorporate the values of this holiday to our actions year round.

Claret Retreat Center presented “A Pro-Life Evening” With an evening Mass by Father Domenico Pinto of St. George’s Parish in Apache Junction. The Mass was followed by a pro-life panel with such dynamic speakers as Father Pinti, Deacon Dick Petersen and Dr. Michael Rock. The event was an incredible success, the speakers shared inspirational and thought provoking messages, answered questions and enlighentened and inspired all who were in attendance. AZRTL wishes to thank the Mt. Claret Retreat, the panel particpants and all who attended for their amazing support of the event and the AZRTL mission.

Arizona Right to Life PAC Announces its Endorsement of Jan Brewer in the Republican Primary for Arizona Governor

Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee (“AzRTL PAC”) announces its endorsement of Jan Brewer in the Republican Primary for Arizona Governor.

AZRTL PAC endorses Jan Brewer because of her strong support of the pro-life cause over her 25 year political career. In just her first term as governor since being appointed in January of 2009, Governor Brewer signed eight pro-life bills into law that will help protect innocent human life in Arizona. Among those bills signed into law incude a ban of partial-birth abortions in Arizona and a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before an abortion can be performed.

“Unlike her immediate predecessor, Governor Brewer has shown she truly cares about women and children by recognizing the importance of protecting all innocent life, including the unborn. For these reasons, AZRTL PAC strongly endorses Governor Brewer in the Republican Primary for Arizona Governor,” according to Walt Opaska, Chairman of the AZRTL PAC.
Other pro-life bills signed by Governor Brewer include a ban on non-doctors performing surgical abortions, a bill that opts Arizona out of providing abortion coverage in any insurance exchanges offered under the new federal health care law and a prohibition on Arizona taxpayer dollars from being used to fund insurance coverage for elective abortions for government employees.

The chapter discussed the excellent Pro-Life Evening & Mass held at Mt. Claret Retreat on June 11th and how to set-up a local chapter of Right to Life. The chapter also made plans for an upcoming Pro-Life event to be held in October, which will be the first annual event sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, #3121. It will be a fundraising dinner to support Arizona Right to Life and its mission. The evening promises a great meal, entertainment and an auction. Mesa- Mesa Right to Life hosted a prayer breakfast at Coco’s on June 22. Chapter President Joseph Perron received donation checks totaling $1733.24. Thank you to Holy Cross Knights of Columbus #7904 for their generous continued support!

The Mesa Chapter contributed to the Arizona Right to Life’s June 11th pro-life event in support of the refreshment expense as well as underwriting tables for the Annual Conference on September 17th and 18th to be held at the Chaparral Suites. Obama’s Choice as Head of Department of Health and Human Services a “One-Man Death Panel“

On July 7th President Barack Obama appointed Donald Berwick as the head of the Center for Medicaid and Medicaid Services (CMS) within the Department of Health and Human Services. Republican leaders in the Senate immediately stated their frustration that Obama waited until the Senate was in recess for the 4th of July break to make the appointment, eliminating the opportunity for Senate leaders to question Berwick prior to his appointment.

“The Obama recess appointment of rationing advocate Donald Berwick to head the key government agency that will apply the new health care law is disastrous news for the vulnerable, especially the elderly and the sickest of American patients,” said Burke Balch, J.D., director of National Right to Life’s Powell Center for Medical Ethics

Confirmation would have met strong opposition from Pro-Life Republican senators appalled by Berwick’s open advocacy of government imposed rationing of medical treatment. The recess appointment, done while the senators were on break bypasses the standard confirmation hearings and lets Berwick assume the post without a vote.

“Donald Berwick is a one-man death panel,” said David N. O’Steen, Ph.D., National Right to Life executive director. “While Americans may not remember the agency he heads, he will quickly become known as Obama’s rationing czar.

Many senators have expressed opposition to the recess appointment and are calling for the opportunity to question Berwick. The president has the power to appoint an official without a vote when the senate is in session, but the appointee must be confirmed by the senate before the next session of Congress or the position becomes vacant again.

Pennsylvania Receives First Public Funds for Abortion under New Health Care bill

”The Obama Administration will give $160 Million in federal tax funds, which we’ve discovered will pay for insurance plans that will cover abortions,” said Dennis Johnson, legislative director for National Right to Life. “This is just the first proof of the phoniness of President Obama’s assurances that federal funds would not subsidize abortion – but it will not be the last.”

The bill passed in March after President Obama made assurances to pro-life Democrats that no public money would be used to fund abortions. To further assure those Democrats, Obama even issued an executive order which NRLC called “meaningless” since a bill signed into law trumps an executive order by the president. We now see the validity in NRLC’s claims as this funding to Pennsylvania will occur despite Obama’s assurances and executive order.

”President Obama successfully opposed including language in the bill to prevent federal subsidies for abortions, and now the Administration is quietly advancing its abortion-expanding agenda through administrative decisions such as this, which they hope will escape broad public attention,” Johnson said.

Bill to Limit Corporations and Non-Profit Groups Like NRLC Facing Hurdles in Senate

After narrowly passing the House of Representatives with 219-206 vote before the July 4th break the “Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act” looks to be losing support in the Senate. The bill would put tough disclosure rules on corporations and non-profits like National Right to Life and its affiliates during elections and harm the ability of such groups to endorse and support candidates, while exempting other groups such as unions, the Sierra Club and the National Rifle Association. The bill sponsors were hoping to target moderate Republicans to cross over and get the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster. One targeted senator Scott Brown (R-MA) has stated that he will not support the bill despite several groups’ attempts to sway him. Another targeted Senator Susan Collins (R- ME) has stated that she has “serious concerns” over the exemptions and worries that the bill is “simply unfair.” A vote is not scheduled as supporters seek to get the votes needed.

And has quietly approved a plan by an appointee of Governor Edward Rendell (D) under which the program will fund any abortion that is legal in Pennsylvania according to National Right to Life.

Mark Crutcher, President of Life Dynamics and producer of ”Maafa 21″ will be a keynote speaker at our conference in September. Conference attendees will have three opportunities to hear from the nationally renowned pro-life advocate. He will serve as the keynote speaker both at the Friday night fundraising dinner and Saturday luncheon, in addition to offering a breakout session on Maafa 21 during the conference.

For many years, Mark Crutcher has been an outspoken and uncompromised opponent of abortion. In 1986, he created the Life Activist Seminar and trained more than 15,000 pro-life activists all across the United States and Canada. Then, in 1992, he founded Life Dynamics which has since become widely recognized as one of the most innovative and professional pro-life organizations in America.
Under Mark’s direction, Life Dynamics has done trailblazing research on the abortion industry and developed an extensive litigation support system to help women sue the abortionists who kill, injure, or sexually assault them. Since 1992, Life Dynamics has also carried out an aggressive direct mail campaign designed to discourage medical professionals from entering the abortion business.
Mark is probably best known for his bold undercover operations that have exposed shocking and even illegal activities inside the abortion industry. Marilyn Musgrave is the Project Director for the Susan B. Anthony List’s Votes Have Consequences Project. and a former congresswoman from Colorado. She was an activist long before she ran for office serving as president of her local Right to Life chapter and on the local school board. After serving two terms in the Colorado House of Representatives and one term in the Colorado Senate, she ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2002. As Colorado’s 4th District representative she served three terms serving as a champion for life and becoming the founding chairwoman of the Pro-life Women’s Caucus. While seeking reelection for her fourth term in 2008 she became a prime target of abortion advocates and lost her congressional seat. She and her husband Steve are enjoying life in Colorado with their children and grandchildren.

As we near the midpoint for 2010 we can see what Arizona Right to Life has been saying for months; 2010 is turning out to be a landmark year for pro-life issues. This year has already seen sweeping legislation successes in Arizona, a terrible health care reform bill funding abortions across the country, and a Supreme Court nominee with horrific pro-abortion connections.

Arizona Right to Life has also seen its fair share of activity this year and garnered a lion’s share of attention regarding endorsements by the Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee. The PAC has endorsed great pro-life candidates in David Schweikert for Congressional District 5, Andrew Thomas for Attorney General, and Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney, but as many of you know our organization has come under some scrutiny over the PAC’s endorsement of John McCain for United States Senator while only acknowledging JD Hayworth’s pro-life voting record in the Arizona Republican Primary.

As President of Arizona Right to Life I strongly encourage you, the pro-life voter, to support and elect those candidates who will stand committed and unwavering to the first and foremost Constitutional unalienable right to life and to those principles of preserving, protecting and promoting the sanctity of life as I will continue to do on behalf of the unborn, the elderly, the chronically ill, people with disabilities and those who cannot speak for themselves.

When faced with two pro-life candidates, it can become difficult, especially when disagreements surface, but the last thing that Arizona Right to Life or the PAC want to do is divide the pro-life community. With all the activity, and the Supreme Court nomination in hand it becomes more important for us to be united, and work towards advancing the causes of life. Regardless of whom you support for a variety of offices, work to ensure that life issues are on the forefront of their campaigns, that they pledge and commit to support life from conception to natural death, and that they will be active in that support. Great will be the day when all candidates have a pro-life record and we must decide amongst ourselves who is the best pro-life choice. Those who oppose us want nothing more than for us to be divided and turning away from each other over issues of candidates and politics, we must rise above this and work toward preserving the most precious gift… Life.

I urge you to join with us and continue the fight against those who would challenge life. To put aside any differences you may have and join us in the one thing we can all agree on: Life is precious and we must work to preserve, protect and promote the sanctity of innocent human life.

Apple and Pampers Launch New Life-Affirming Application for Ipad

A new app for Apple’s iPad, called “Hello Baby”, launched through a partnership between Pampers and Apple highlights the growth and development of an unborn child and allows parents and others to see the wonder of life from inside the womb, allowing parents the opportunity to connect with their unborn children. Arizona Right to Life Offers its Support to Bishop Olmstead in Defense of the Unborn

Arizona Right to Life would like to join those in support of Bishop Olmstead for the excommunication of Sister Margaret McBride. Everyone agrees that it was a difficult decision, but Bishop Olmstead acted appropriately and honorably in defending the life of an unborn child.

Circumstances such as this one are never easy and the facts of this particular instance can be debated. But Bishop Olmstead was correct in defending the moral principle that it is wrong to intentionally take the life of an innocent human being.

Chandler Right to Life

The South East (Chandler) Chapter of Right to Life will be holding their next meeting on Monday, June 14, 2010 at 7:00pm. The meeting will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 644 East Chandler Blvd, Chandler, AZ 85225. Mesa Right to Life

The Mesa Chapter of Right to Life supported the recent Arizona Right to Life Mother’s Day Fundraiser with the purchase of 100 single red roses, each individually wrapped with baby breath in separate water tubes. Along with the gracious volunteers from St. Anne’s Respect Life Ministry, chapter members presented a rose to each of the female residents of the East Mesa Healthcare Nursing Home and their caregivers on Saturday, May 8th. It was a heartfelt, gratifying experience for those that shared their precious time with our elderly, who in turn, were most delightfully receptive and appreciative of this thoughtful gesture.

Chapter President Joe Perron also surprised our eldest member of the chapter, Mary Esposito, who is now residing at a Christian Care establishment in Mesa for seniors, with a beautiful bouquet of roses on behalf of the Mesa Chapter.

The chapter leaders, Joe and Jinny Perron, wish to acknowledge and thank the Knights of Columbus for extending an invitation to the Mesa Chapter to host a pro-life booth at their recent annual K of C Convention on May 21st and 22nd at the Ft. McDowell Radisson Resort. The Knights and their wives received the Perrons with warm enthusiasm and greatly appreciated the pro-life message shared by Mesa Right to Life.

WHAT IS A RIGHT TO LIFE CHAPTER……… A Right to Life Chapter is the heart of the pro-life movement connecting the national, state and local level.

It is the building block of the pro-life movement. Just as a building cannot stand without its bricks, neither can the pro-life movement succeed in its educational and legislative goals without the work of chapters on the local level.

As an extension of Arizona and National RTL, a chapter is a group of people in a local community who are committed to working to spread the message of life. Together, we keep the issue before society and blanket the nation in pro-life action!

Chapters are non-denominational and work with all people to advance the pro-life message in a community.

While the core purpose of all chapters is the same, the structure and appearance of a RTL chapter can vary tremendously. Some chapters are large with many opportunities for member involvement, monthly meetings, fundraising, and many large events . Other chapters are smaller, consisting of a few people who serve as a contact point between the state office and their local area.

A Chapter subscribes to the mission of the Arizona Right to Life and takes part in our state events and quarterly State Board meetings.

Imagine – an active pro-life chapter in every community of our state, all working to the same goal of passing pro-life legislation, electing pro-life officials, educating the community, serving those in time of pregnancy, and bringing in all churches………abortion could not survive!

Arizona Right to Life PAC Announces Endorsement of Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney; John McCain for U.S. Senate- Acknowledges JD Hayworth’s Perfect Pro-Life Record

In separate press releases dated May 17th and 18th 2010 the Political Action Committee for Arizona Right to Life announced its endorsement of Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney and John McCain for U.S. Senate, while acknowledging the perfect pro-life voting record of JD Hayworth, who is also a candidate for U.S. Senate

AZRTL PAC endorses Montgomery as a “strong and steadfast supporter of the sanctity of life from conception to natural death.” According to Walt Opaska, Chairman of the PAC.

The following day the PAC announed its endorsement of McCain for his” long history of supporting pro-life legislation.” Over his 23 year Senate career McCain has “voted seven times to ban partial-birth abortions and co-sponsor[ed] four separate pieces of to end this horrible practice.”

The Education Team of Arizona Right to Life had great success at their recent Sidewalk Counseling Workshop held May 15th at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in downtown Phoenix. It was an overflow crowd, A total of 62 people turned out for a 3-hour workshop on Sidewalk Counseling. A diverse gathering including, clergy, youth, veteran sidewalk counselors and newcomers listened to Arizona Right to Life Speaker Bureau presenters, LeeAnne Abel and Karen Williams. They demonstrated that it is through a powerful witness of love and support that we can change the hearts and minds of the abortion-bound. The training puts useful, pro-life tools in the hands of participants. “You just never know when someone in your community, workplace or family will need guidance during a crisis pregnancy,” stated Abel. Stormwind Studios was present to film the event and a DVD of the event will be forthcoming. AZRTL Education Chair Candida Kirkpatrick and Director of Education Karen Williams are currently forming the AZRTL Education Committee. The purpose of this committee is to bring greater leadership, education and insight to Arizona through a task force of energetic, pro-life individuals from various generations, cultures and levels of experience. We are very excited about this new phase of our growth.

America Becoming More and More Pro-Life

Military Gets Drafted into War Against the Unborn

Late last month as the Senate Armed Services discussed the replealing of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding homosexuality in the armed forces, Senator Roland W. Burris (D-IL) threw the pro-life community a curveball by adding an amendment that would allow abortions at military hospitals. The bill, if passed would require women seeking an abortion to pay for the procedure up front and not rely on government funds. But it also allows abortions to be performed at military installations, if those criteria are met, changing a policy adopted in the 1990′s restricting abortions at military facilities to only situations of rape, incest to protect the mother’s life.

This policy change would mean the deaths of many unborn, innocent children at the hands of the military. The military does not support the change, and we should not either. Make sure your senators know to oppose the Burris amendment.

The last year has been a momentous one in the battle to support and protect life. We have seen great opposition, with the passing of the federal healthcare reform package and its abortion funding mandate.

We have also seen great success with the signing into law of several key pieces of state legislation including: opting Arizona out of the abortion insurance coverage mandate and requiring strict reporting guidelines on abortions giving us the information we need to fight abortions and influence policy.

With these peaks and valleys in our ongoing battle, it is now more important than ever that we recommit and strengthen our resolve to protect the sanctity of life and do our part to fight all those who attack it. Arizona Right to Life continues to be the premier life-education organization in the state. We work to inform and mobilize the people of this state to stand in defense of our most precious gift… life.

We stand as shepherds to the unborn, protecting them against countless wolves who would do them harm. These unborn children, just like sheep, need protection and if we do not answer the call, then who will?

Pro-Life Cause Gains Victory with Two Bills Signed Into Law

Within days of each other Governor Brewer gave pro-life supporters a great victory by signing two key pieces of legislation.

On April 20th, the governor signed SB 1304, requiring statistical data on abortions be kept and recorded. The information will include general information on the numbers of abortions performed, age etc. It will also record whether or not parental notification was waived by judicial order. The information will be compiled in an annual report by the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services. Pro-life advocates will use this information to educate legislators and work toward more victories in the future.

Just four days later, on Saturday, April 24th Brewer signed SB 1305 into law. Opting Arizona out of the abortion insurance coverage mandate included in the federal health care reform package. Her signature made Arizona one of the first states to have a signed law in place, with as many as 28 others considering similar bills.

Legislature Adjourns Sine Die

The 49th Legislature, Second general session adjourned Sine Die April 29, 2010 at 11:29pm. It was the first time the legislature adjourned in April since 2000. The lawmakers made a late night push to finish business and end the 2010 session. With an election year looming there will be a great deal of change the next time the legislature meets for a regular session as 39 of the state’s 90 lawmakers will be retiring or leaving to seek another office. With this much change it will be imperative to elect candidates who support life. Chandler Right to Life

The Chandler chapter held it’s annual election on April 20th, 2010. The Chapter chose to re-elect Paul Fordtner as Chapter President and Marie Fordtner as Treasurer. Charles Ryan was newly elected to serve as chapter Vice President. Chandler Right to Life is actively seeking new members in the SE valley to join us in supporting and defending life. Mesa Right to Life

In a recent election, the Mesa chapter re-elected Joe & Jinny Perron as their chapter leaders and Genny Jones as the secretary for the annual term beginning in May.

Mesa Right to Life will be hosting a educational booth at the Knights of Columbus State Convention May 21-22nd at the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort.

Tucson Northeast Right to Life

Tucson NE Chapter Treasurer, Ann Downey coordinates a prayerful witness five days a week by the two remaining abortion clinics that remain active in Tucson, both are only one block apart.

In April the chapter sponsored a booth at the Pima County Fair. During the six days of our booth the lively, outgoing volunteers at the booth shared pro-life literature and messages with the fair goers. The volunteers informed the public of of the negative spiritual, psychological, social and physical aftermath following an abortion. We had several interested persons sign up to receive more information about how to become informed of Pro Life projects and be involved. Our medical representative will continue to be active in providing alternatives for pregnant mothers, who feel unsupported, in choosing LIFE at the newly dedicated Fatima Women’s Center. Arizona Right to Life PAC Announces Endorsement of Andrew Thomas for Attorney General

In a Press release dated April 16th 2010 the Political Action Committee for Arizona Right to Life announced its endorsement of Andrew Thomas for Arizona Attorney General. Thomas becomes the second candidate endorsed by AZRTL joining David Schweikert for the GOP primary of Congressional District 5.

AZRTL PAC endorses Thomas based on his long involvement and commitment to Arizona Right to Life and the pro-life movement.

“Andrew Thomas has shown a dedication to the prolife cause unmatched by most in public office. He and his wife have both served on the board of Arizona Right to Life, and he has lobbied for Arizona Right to Life at the legislature. Arizona Right to Life’s new Education Director, Karen Williams has hit the ground running in her mission to raise awareness about life issues, and support life at education events throughout the state.

April was a busy month as the Arizona Right to Life sponsored a booth at the ASU Women’s Health Fair in Tempe on April 27th. AZRTL joined with other pro-life groups to champion the voice for life at the fair. The Memorial for the Unborn was a a touching display of 20 pairs of baby shoes with emotional testimonials of the sorrow that endures even years after an abortion takes place. AZRTL hopes to expand the memorial to increase awareness of the heartbreak of abortion, and let women know that 94% of women regret their abortions and this heartbreak can be avoided.

**Many Pro-Life Groups including ASU Students for Life joined in creating a strong united pro-life presence at the fair.**

April also had many opportunities to increase awareness of life issues, including a concert by the very talented Eric Genius, and the showing of Maafa 21 an eye-opening documentary on the atrocities of abortion in our country. Special thanks go to the host locations for the movie showings and Maria Birnbaum for her work in bringing the film to local audiences.

Arizona Right to Life Proudly Presents: Sidewalk Counselor Training

AZRTL is pleased to announce training for anyone interested in being a sidewalk counselor. The training is open to anyone interested in intelligently, graciously and effectively saving women, men and their unborn children from the horrors of abortion. AZ Teens 4 Life At ASU Women’s Fair in April

Arizona Teens for Life has reached an all-new high in members — more than 700 teens have decided to stand up in defense of human life by joining forces with AZT4L! And there’s never been a better time for it. With the recent passing of the healthcare bill, opposition to abortion is really starting to grow, and every one of us should have a desire to be a part of it, especially because we are the next generation! There is no cause worthier of our attention than this one.

This past April, teens from Arizona Teens for Life joined together at a local movie theatre to watch “The Human Experience” and “Letters to God,” both very life-affirming movies! Attendees were able to meet the filmmakers of “The Human Experience”, Michael Campo and Jeffrey Azize. A Great April for Pro-Lifers in State Legislatures

April has been a landmark month in the support and approval of pro-life legislation across the country. Many states including Arizona, Oklahoma and Nebraska have seen unparallelled success in enacting laws that restrict and regulate abortions.

Dave Andrusko, of National Right to Life, chronicles the latest successes in Oklahoma and other areas and notes there may be a movement across the country to support pro-life legislation.

In Oklahoma the legislature was able to garner enough votes to override two gubernatorial vetoes by Gov. Brad Henry on a pair of pro-life bills. The bills require that a woman would be shown a picture of an ultrasound before deciding to have an abortion, and disallows the practice of “wrongful life” lawsuits stemming from the premise that children with disabilities would ”be better off aborted.”

This coupled with the two laws signed by Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer, and pro-life legislation being considered in roughly 28 other states, shows that this is not an isolated incident, but an advance of the pro-life legislation nationwide.

Many, many thanks to all who supported our recent banquet in honor of the lives and legacies of Drs. Carolyn Gerster and Michael Rock. Both honorees are Phoenix area Physicians who have served diligently in the defense of life for decades! The passionate pro-life video greeting, from Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, reaffirmed the importance of electing pro-life legislators to our state and national offices in the battle against the horrendous attack on the unborn. During the meet and greet reception, prior to the dinner, attendees had a chance to visit with those representatives that supported the event with their presence. A powerful video message from Congressman Trent Franks given on the floor of the House of Representatives on the occasion of the 36th Anniversary of Roe v Wade prompted a standing ovation from our guests closing out the evening’s event.

Through your generosity this 6th Annual Benefit Banquet was most successful and the funds generated will help us tremendously with our daily lifesaving efforts!

A Death Threat to All Americans – Born and Unborn! The will of the American people was ignored by both houses of Congress as the majority of the House of Representatives recently passed (HR 3590) the federal takeover of our healthcare system.

Senior citizens fear this bill will be their death knell – mandating “Advance Care Consults” that may include an ORDER for end of life plans (death panels). In addition, this bill provides an “approved” list of end of life resources guiding one in death, also called “assisted suicide” putting the elderly on a fast track to the cemetery!

Regardless of the content of the executive order, used as part of a “deal” to push this bill through, this bill contains massive abortion funding that even the president’s executive order cannot mitigate. Make no mistake, this executive order was issued only for political effect, it changes nothing! It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions contained in this deadly bill.

Fortunately, there are no permanent victories or defeats in Washington! For millions of Americans and Arizona Right to Life we are now entering round two in this fight to save innocent lives! Will you join our fight and become a part of our Mission in helping us to educate our lawmakers as well as those who aspire to become future lawmakers on the sanctity of human life with your continued financial support? As lives stand in the balance we must continue onward!

A Heartfelt Goodbye. After nearly three and a half years of dedicated service to Arizona Right to Life, Sherry Welsch, our Office Manager has retired from the workforce. As we sadly say good-bye to Sherry we welcome in two new staff members to the Arizona Right to Life family.

Welcome to the Team! Charles Ryan, a 23 year Army veteran has come to us fully experienced in Administrative and Office Manager skills and has assumed a full time position in the capacity of office manager. Charles is a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus and is active with the Chandler Right to Life Chapter.

Karen Williams has recently joined the staff as the Arizona Right to Life Director of Education. Her expertise is in sidewalk counseling, training on the Abortion: Inside the Choice and is an accomplished speaker with our Speaker’s Bureau. Karen’s greatest joys in life are God, family and service.

Arizona Will Join Multi-State Health Care Lawsuit

Phoenix, AZ — April 7, 2010-

The State of Arizona has begun the process to join 14 other states to challenge the constitutionality of recent national healthcare reforms.

Joseph Kanefield, Brewer’s general counsel, will represent the state in court. ”By passing this onerous federal mandate, Congress has exceeded its authority and left the State of Arizona no option but to challenge this unconstitutional act in court.” Brewer wrote in a press release dated March 29, 2010.

Brewer has expressed many concerns over the bill, many of them citing the cost to the state in adopting this program. The cost to America’s unborn is even greater, as the bill has provisions to publicly fund and promote abortions across the country and our state.

Brewer also used the statement to challenge Attorney General Terry Goddard for not filing the lawsuit himself, claiming he is “defending his political allies in Washington.” instead of “defending the citizens of Arizona.

Arizona Right to Life, while remaining neutral in the budget battle, supports any opposition to the health care reforms passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. We encourage everyone to support your lawmakers in opposition of the reforms.

Bill to Strengthen Abortion Reporting Requirements Passes State Senate

Phoenix, AZ — March 22, 2010

The Arizona State Senate passed SB 1304, which strengthens Arizona’s reporting laws on abortions. The bill would put into law current requirements set by Department of Health Services rules for confidential reports submitted by abortion providers. It also requires court reports on how many times judges bypass parantal consent requirements. The bill passed the Senate 17-12 with one senator not voting. It next moves to the House of Representatives.

SW CHAPTER (Goodyear)-

The AZRTL SW Chapter under the direction of Margaret and Jesus Simental hosted guest speaker Jason Walsh, from the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, at their March 16th meeting. Chapter members also actively participated in the recent 40 Days for Life Campaign. Margaret, Jesus, and Debbie had the opportunity to attend sidewalk counseling training with Monsignor Reilly. Members of the chapter also served as volunteers at the AZRTL booth for the recent youth group rally in Avondale. SE CHAPTER (Chandler)-

The AZRTL SE Chapter (Chandler) sponsored a booth at the annual Chandler Ostrich Festival held at Tumbleweek Park from March 12-14. The booth, sponsored in concert with the local Knights of Columbus Council, was supported by a collaboration of local organizations under the direction of Paul and Marie Fordtner. These supportive groups included: the Chandler chapter of Right to Life, the RTL state office, St. Mary’s Respect Life and Legion of Mary, and Council 3121 of the Knights of Columbus. The event served as an excellent vehicle in which to get our message out to the public and get maximum visibility. The booth collected donations and 15 pages of signatures for the petition condemning “The Obama Healthcare Plan.” The booth also entertained with a ‘Test Your Abortion Knowledge’ game and free candy. Special thanks to the state office of AZRTL and the K of C for their donated equipment such as a canopy, fetal development display, educational literature, tables, chairs and tootsie rolls. Message from Life Education Corp. On April 22nd Melanie Pritchard, Director of Education for the Life Education Corporation will be the keynote speaker at the Bourgarde High School in Phoenix. Melanie will address the students at a school-wide assembly on the effects of abortion and the choices they make.

Directly following this engagement Melanie will attend the St. Thomas 8th grade girl’s retreat where she will teach thirty young girls on their dignity and self-worth – reminding them that every person’s worth, including the unborn, begins the day they are conceived and will last until natural death.

On Tuesday, April 27th ASU Students for Life will host its 3rd campus women’s fair. Many pro-life organizations and abortion healing organizations are invited to set up tables to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information for the students answering their questions and providing resources to help them make informed and healthy choices.

In addition the ASU Students for Life are planning to set up a display of babies’ shoes with letters from both men and women who have lost a child to abortion hoping this powerful display will make a lasting impact on the students at ASU. 40 Days for Life- Spring Campaign – 40 DAYS FOR LIFE SAVES BABIES………By March 24th just days before the end of the Spring 2010 campaign, the total number of babies saved from abortion reached nearly 400 nationwide.

Organizers in Arizona, one of the strongest most organized pro-life states in the country, say about 20-30 women who were seeking an abortion at two local clinics in Phoenix and Tempe ( near the campus of ASU) changed their mind after seeing the prayerful presence of those on the sidewalks just outside Planned Parenthood’s doors.
40 Days for Life Fall Campaign is scheduled to begin September 22nd through October 31, 2010.

Arizona Teens for Life and its Phoenix chapter continue to grow, and is getting more and more interested teens involved in becoming champions for life! On April 10th the group gathered a large number of teens together for a movie event and watched “The Human Experience”. Attendees even had the opportunity to meet with the filmmakers and ask questions after the movie!

National Right to Life Issues Statement on Abortion “Deal” on Healthcare Legislation

Washington, DC–March 21, 2010 – In response to the announcement of an agreement between Rep. Bart Stupak (D- MI) and President Barack Obama on the Health Care Reform bill (HR 3590) the NRLC issued a statement reaffirming its opposition to the bill in its entirety and that the “deal” changes nothing and was used just for “political effect.”

Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens Announces Retirement

Washingon, DC – April 10,2010 — In a letter dated April 9, 2010, to President Barack Obama, Senior Associate Justice John Paul Stevens announced his decision to retire when the Court concludes its work for the summer in late June or early July. Justice Stevens, 90, was an appointee by President Gerald R. Ford in 1975 and was the senior most member of the court. Often called “The Liberal Lion” or “Leader of the Liberals,” he often spoke for the more liberal members of the High Court. The decision gives President Obama the unusual opportunity to appoint back to back Supreme Court justices in just his first two years in office. He appointed Justice Sonia Sotomayor to replace David Souter in 2009.

The debate over the new appointment is expected to be heated, as it coincides with an election year. A new justice will have the ability to influence this country and its legal precedents for decades. A liberal justice who does not support the Right to Life message could lead to millions of deaths of the most innocent Americans. State Senate Passes Proposed Constitutional Ban on Human Cloning

Phoenix, AZ — March 1, 2010 – The Arizona State Senate passed a resolution Monday that would amend the state constitution to ban human cloning in any form. SCR 1044 passed by a 19-9 margin and will now be sent to the Arizona House of Representatives. The proposed amendment will change current state law which only "prohibits state or public monies" being used to finance human cloning, but allows for scientific research in the use of nuclear transfer or other cloning techniques to produce molecules, DNA, cells other than human embryos, tissues, organs, plants or animals other than humans. This resolution would ban all forms of human cloning in Arizona.

SCR 1044 next heads to the house, then must be signed by the governor and ratified by the voters of the state in order to take effect.

Mesa - The Mesa Right to Life Chapter came out in full force in support of the Arizona Right to Life March and Rally commemorating the 37th Anniversary of Roe v Wade on January 24, 2010 at Steele Indian Park. Several members of the chapter volunteered at the Arizona Right to Life booth during the event.

In concert with the Holy Cross Knights of Columbus Council # 7904 the Mesa Chapter hosted the Late Nite Catechism III production from the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, on February 11, 2010 raising thousands of dollars for the pro-life community. The Mesa RTL will use a portion of their proceeds to sponsor a table for the upcoming Arizona Right to Life Benefit Banquet on Saturday, March 6, 2010 in celebration of the pro-life legacy of Dr. Carolyn F. Gerster, Chairman of the Board of Arizona Right to Life.

The Mesa Chapter sponsored a table for the pro-life event: "Settling the Pro-life Debate with the inspirational and motivational speaker Yvonne Florczak-Seeman on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at St. Joan of Arc in support of the St. Joseph’s Respect Life Ministry.

Chapter Members are passionately participating in the current "40 Days for Life" campaign dedicated to prayer and abstinence for the protection and safety of our pre-born brothers and sisters.

Southwest/ Goodyear- The Southwest Chapter is praying at Planned Parenthood located at 140 N. Litchfield Rd in Goodyear during the 40 days for life campaign.
In our February meeting we learned about the drug Plan B (often called the Morning After Pill). We also learned about abortion and the link to breast cancer. We had a discussion on what we are legally allowed to do in front of the abortion facilities during our prayer vigils.

Tucson Northwest- Monsignor Reilly from the Diocese of Brooklyn and the founder of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants was snowed-in at the New York Airport on Feb. 26th, but has rescheduled and will be in Tucson on Friday, March 5th and Saturday March 6th.

He will lead the "40 Days of Prayer and Fasting" in prayerful presence at the Tucson Women’s Center on Friday at 4:30. The women’s center is located on Beverly between Grant and Pima. Following the service he will be at Healy Hall for friendly fellowship and a lenten meal at the Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. Healy Hall is located on Craycroft & Broadway.

He will also concelebrate the Prolife Mass at 8:30 am on Saturday morning with Fr. Ricker at the Church of Sts. Peter & Paul located on Campbell between Speedway and Grant. After Mass he will be praying on Grant and Wyatt where Planned Parenthood has offices.

Tucson Central Southwest- On Valentine’s Day the Tucson Central Southwest Chapter and the Tucson North East Chapter had their kick-off for 40 Days for Life at Reid Park. The chapter is bringing new volunteers to pray but still need more volunteers. "We certainty need to ask for prayer for this campaign", said Cheryl DeSolorzano, Chapter President, "as we are doing work that is interfering with the enemy’s plans and we must always be prepared for the battle".

The Chapter participated in their second "Face the Truth" event on Feb. 15th, at University and Park. Cheryl stated that "people must see what abortion does to an innocent human being in their mother’s womb." After the event some from the chapter attended a viewing of the Maafa 21 movie shown at the University of Arizona Student Union.

Meet the Chairman: Walter Opaska

Arizona Right to Life would like to welcome the newly appointed chairman of the Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee, Walter P. Opaska.

Chairman Opaska brings a wealth of experience in political campaigns, communications and grassroots organization that will make him very valuable as the PAC moves forward in the future.

He presently serves on the Maricopa County Republican Party Executive Committee as a Member-at-Large and was previously with the Pima County Republican Party as a member of the executive committee and their webmaster.

He led a grassroots campaign in Glendale to oppose a city tax increase, served as treasurer of Arizona’s District 4 Republican Party and worked with Geoge W. Bush’s first presidential campaign in Texas and his reelection campaign in southern Arizona. He has worked on many campaigns in three states, and has a wealth of knowledge on campaign operations and political organization.

He is a graduate cum laude from the University of Arizona School of Law, where he also served as president of the school’s Federalist Society. He also holds degrees from the University of Texas and James Madison University.

We are all very excited about the leadership and experience that Chairman Opaska brings to AZRTL PAC and look forward to the direction he will take the PAC to in 2010.

Karen Williams and LeeAnne Abel hosted an "Abortion: Inside the Choice" leadership training eminar at Our Lady of Joy Parish in Scottsdale where about 25 people learned how to effectively communicate the pro-life message. Both women have spent the past few months meeting with Education Director Melanie Pritchard, to learn how to give this very important training. Participants were encouraged to share comments and give feedback on the seminar in a survey after the training. One participant commented, "I enjoyed being given information on how to effectively debate and educate individuals who are pro-choice or in crisis pregnancy situations. The role playing, video and tools made an impact and made me realize the mistakes I’ve made in debating others before." The majority of participants agreed that the speakers did an incredible job presenting and that the information received was outstanding and informative.

Karen and LeeAnne are part of the AZRTL Speaker’s Bureau. Other topics they frequently present are: Sidewalk Counseling and Post-Abortive Healing.

Teens from throughout the Valley got together to discuss ideas for upcoming events as they enjoyed milkshakes and ice cream. President Obama, Pelosi, Reid launch big push for pro-abortion health care bill!

Washington, DC–Feb. 26, 2010 – President Obama and top Democratic congressional leaders have launched an all-out push for a massive health care restructuring bill. Which, among other things, includes sweeping pro-abortion provisions.

Since passing the bill (H.R. 3590) out of the Senate on December 19th bill supporters have had trouble mustering up the votes needed in the House of Representatives. Partly because of the hard work of NRLC and the opposition of pro-life Democrats in the House. The plans were further derailed by the election of Republican Scott Brown to fill the seat long held by bill advocate Senator Ted Kennedy. The move is seen as an indicator of the change in the level of support for the health Care initiative.
