St Joseph’s Loses Catholic Standing Over Terminated Pregnancy

St. Joseph’s Hospital Loses Catholic Status Over Terminated Pregnancy

Phoenix, AZ – December 21, 2010 - Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, declared today that St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center can no longer be considered Catholic. The Bishop stated that the Hospital and Catholic Healthcare West, had failed to comply with the Ethical and Religious Directives of the Church.

The issue stems from an incident last year, where St. Joseph’s Hospital elected to terminate the pregnancy of a seriously ill pregnant woman because they considered the pregnancy put the mother’s life at risk. Hospital officials have stated that they terminated the pregnancy to save the mother’s life.

Sister Margaret McBride, who sat on the hospital’s ethics panel and allowed the abortion to take place, was excommunicated from the Catholic Church for her participation. Catholic Church doctrine considers that when the baby’s life is specifically targeted for termination, such an act is considered an abortion. The Church does not consider it an abortion when an unborn child dies as an indirect result of any other medical efforts to assist the mother.

According to the Bishop, this abortion was not the only reason for his decision. Recently, he had learned that for more than seven years CHW has committed numerous violations of the Catholic Church’s Ethical and Religious Directives for Healthcare.

Arizona Right to Life acknowledges the difficulty of this decision and our hearts and prayers go out to the family who lost their child. While we realize that this decision may be divisive, we praise and support the stance taken by Bishop Olmsted and the Catholic Church that promotes life and values the lives of both mother and child during the pregnancy.

Arizona Right to Life Board of Directors Names

New President

Phoenix, AZ – December 10, 2010 - The Arizona Right To Life (AZRTL) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the ascendency of John Garcia to the presidency of Arizona Right To Life. John succeeds Virginia (Jinny) Perron who has served as president of ARZTL for the past three years.

John had previously served as AZRTL’s vice-president and head of AZRTL’s finance committee. John has over 20 years experience in government finance, strategic planning, and information technology. He and his wife Patty currently serve as the Pro-Life Chair Couple for the Arizona State Council of the Knights of Columbus. As a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 20 years, he has served in many leadership roles. Additionally, John has been the director of public relations for the Knights in Arizona for 10 years. His face is familiar to many in the pro-life movement. John has actively supported life issues for over eight years.

“John Garcia brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and dedication to the job of leading AZRTL into the New Year,” said John Jakubczyk, a former president of AZRTL and current member of the Board of Directors. “We look forward to the new ideas and energy he will bring in this new leadership role.”

Arizona Right to Life PAC Announces its Endorsement For the 2010 General Election

Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee (“AzRTL PAC”) announces its endorsements for the November 2^nd General Election.

“The Obama Administration is the most pro-abortion administration in our country’s history. This election represents an excellent opportunity to return a conservative pro-life majority to the U.S. Congress and halt the erosion of the protection of the unborn. We must also support those candidates at the state and local level that will continue to work to expand the protection of innocent human life,” said Walt Opaska, chair of AzRTL PAC.

Accordingly, the Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee endorses the following candidates for the November 2^nd General Election:

In the Attorney General race, neither candidate meets AzRTL PAC requirements for an endorsement. However, Tom Horne has publicly pledged to vigorously enforce and defend all pro-life laws and while in legislature, he voted to ban partial birth abortion (HB 2113 4/8/97) and supported a parental consent law (SB 1238 2/23/00). Democrat candidate Felecia Rotellini has refused to answer our questions regarding her position on abortion but is strongly supported by abortion provider Planned Parenthood, and the pro-abortion groups Emily’s List and Arizona’s List. AzRTL PAC recommends that voters consider which candidate will enforce laws that protect women and unborn children.

“With so much at stake and the fate of unborn children in the balance, we encourage every pro-life Arizonan to lend a hand to and vote for candidates of conscience who understand the importance and dignity of every innocent human life,” said Opaska. We urge all pro-life voters to unite behind the candidates that AzRTL PAC endorses, so that we can make a difference by electing public officials who will protect the weak and vulnerable among us.

Senate to Vote on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy Tomorrow September 21st. Provision Will Allow Abortions at Military Installations.

The Senate is preparing to hold a floor vote on repealing the nation’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy regarding homosexuals in the military. While this bill, on face value, does not seem to affect pro-life issues, an amendment added to the bill by Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL) would additionally allow abortions on military installations around the world. The Burris amendment requires women seeking an abortion to pay for the procedure up front and not rely on government funds. But it also allows abortions to be performed at military installations if those criteria are met. This fundamentally changes a policy adopted in the 1990′s restricting abortions at military facilities to only situations of rape, incest and to protect the mother’s life.

This policy change would mean the deaths of many unborn, innocent children at the hands of the military. The military does not support the change, and we need to stand in opposition as well.

Arizona Right to Life PAC Announces its Endorsements For the 2010 Primary Election To the U.S. Congress

Phoenix, AZ- July 16, 2010 - The Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee (AZRTL PAC) hereby announces its endorsements, recommendations, and acknowledgments for the 2010 Primary Election for Arizona’s eight Congressional Districts. AZRTL PAC based the following determinations on the candidate’s answers to the AZRTL PAC questionnaire, their history of pro-life involvement, any history of voting on abortion related legislation, and their chances of defeating pro-abortion candidates in the general election.

AZRTL PAC further notes that in many districts, there are numerous candidates who hold pro-life positions. Those looking to understand AZRTL PAC’s endorsements or acknowledgments should read carefully the rationale behind the decisions.

Congressional District 1

AZRTL PAC recommends and endorses the following candidates running for the Republican nomination to represent Congressional District 1: Bradley Beauchamp, Rusty Bowers, Paul Gosar, and Sydney Hay. All of these candidates hold a strong pro-life position. After examining all of the candidates in this race, AZRTL PAC believes any of the endorsed candidates appear to be highly electable against their general election pro-abortion opponent, Ann Kirkpatrick. AZRTL PAC encourages its membership to examine each of the candidates and support the one believed to have the best chance to win in November.

Congressional District 2

AZRTL PAC endorses incumbent Congressman Trent Franks, who has a long history of pro-life support, is a long-time friend of Arizona Right to Life, and whose support for the unborn children is well-known both in Washington and Arizona, as well as throughout the nation.

Congressional District 3

AZRTL PAC applauds the large pro-life contingent of candidates seeking this office. There are certain candidates running who have a history of active pro-life involvement, both at the legislature and in private circles. Therefore, AZRTL PAC endorses those with a pro-life legislative voting history and acknowledges those candidates who have successfully filled out the questionnaire identifying them as pro-life.

In the Republican Primary in Congressional District 3, AZRTL PAC endorses:
A.        Jim Waring — Jim Waring is a former state senator from Arizona State Legislative District 7, having served in the Arizona legislature for eight years. Jim Waring has had a 100% lifetime pro-life voting record, and is a long-time friend and supporter of Arizona Right to Life.
B.        Pamela Gorman — Pamela Gorman has been a state legislator in District 6 for six years, first elected to the House in 2004 and then to the Senate in 2006. She has had a 100% voting record while in District 6 and has been a strong backer of Arizona Right to Life.
C.        Sam Crump — Sam Crump has been a state representative from Legislative District 6 for four years. He has a 100% pro-life voting record, and has been a long-time friend of Arizona Right to Life.

AZRTL PAC further recognizes and acknowledges the following pro-life candidates also running in CD-3.

There are two Republican running who are pro-abortion, Paulina Morris and LeAnn Hull. AZRTL PAC strongly urges all pro-life voters not to support Paulina Morris or LeAnn Hull.
Those who take seriously their pro-life vote should consider electability and experience, as well as a pro-life voting record, in considering the candidate whom they should support.

Congressional District 4

AZRTL PAC endorses Jose Penalosa in the Republican Primary for Congressional District 4. While he has never held public office, he has been an attorney working in Central Phoenix for almost twenty years. He has the credentials and the passion to challenge Ed Pastor, the current pro-abortion Democrat Congressman. Pastor used to vote pro-life when a member of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. However, once he became a Congressman, he towed the pro-abortion party line, and since then has not voted for the most reasonable pro-life legislation.

Congressional District 5

AZRTL PAC has previously and once again endorses David Schweikert in the Republican Primary for Congressional District 5. We believe Mr. Schweikert would be the most likely person to defeat pro-abortion Harry Mitchell in the general election.

AZRTL PAC also acknowledges that fellow challenger, Jim Ward, has filled out his questionnaire pro-life. Perennial candidate Susan Bitter-Smith is pro-abortion and we urge all pro-lifers not to support her.

Congressional District 6

AZRTL PAC endorses Jeff Flake for re-election. Jeff Flake has 100% lifetime voting record during his five terms in Congress.

Congressional District 7

AZRTL PAC endorses Ruth McClung in the Republican Primary for Congressional District 7. AZRTL PAC agrees with Ruth McClung that “human life, from the youngest to the oldest, is of the highest value and must be defended.”

Congressional District 8

AZRTL PAC endorses Jonathan Paton in the Republican Primary for Congressional District 8. Mr. Paton is a former state legislator and state senator from Arizona Legislative District 30. Former state senator Paton also served his nation in Iraq, defending life in a most concrete way. We acknowledge fellow candidate Jesse Kelly to be pro-life, however, AZRTL PAC believes that Jonathan Paton would be the strongest candidate to defeat the pro-abortion Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in the general election.

AZRTL Endorses Jan Brewer for Governor

AZRTL PAC iterates its endorsement of Jan Brewer in the Republican Primary for Arizona Governor because she has been a supporter of the pro-life cause for over 25 years. Since becoming governor in January 2009, Governor Jan Brewer signed into law eight pro-life bills that will help protect innocent human life in Arizona. “In just 18 months as governor, Governor Brewer has proven herself to be a strong advocate for the sanctity of life,” said Walt Opaska, Chairman of the AZRTL PAC.

AZRTL Endorses Andrew Thomas for Attorney General

AZRTL PAC endorses Andrew Thomas in the Republican Primary for Arizona Attorney General. AZRTL PAC endorses Thomas based on his long history of involvement and commitment to Arizona Right to Life and the pro-life movement.

As President of the Senate, Ken Bennett was a leader in supporting pro-life legislation and maintained a 100 percent life-time pro-life voting record.

Phoenix, AZ- April 16, 2010 -Arizona Right to Life Political Action Committee (“AZRTL PAC”) today announces its endorsement of Andrew Thomas in the Republican Primary for Arizona Attorney General. AZRTL PAC endorses Thomas based on his long history of involvement and commitment to Arizona Right to Life and the prolife movement.
